Cheap snowboards and skis: stay tuned for Toronto Snow Show

Skis in front of chaletWhether you’re carving with parallel feet or just getting the hang of riding down a green circle run, local ski and snowboard shows are a great place to get a deal on cheap gear.

In Toronto, the 2014 Snow Show runs from October 16 to the 19th at the International Centre in Mississauga.

Some stores will be selling gear at massive discounts. I bought a pair of skis there at about 50% off a couple of years ago.

Here are some tips to get the best ski and snowboard deals – and other cheap winter sport accessories like jackets, helmets and goggles.

1. Get there early

This is a chance for ski and snowboard shops to really clear out their old merchandise, and to get a head start on 2014 gear. Selection quickly dwindles as the show goes on, so take advantage of the chance to find your size by getting to the show early, preferably on the first day.

2. Know what you’re looking for, and how much it would really cost

Just because something is available at a discount doesn’t mean it’s actually a bargain. Do some research online so you know what you’re shopping for, and how much it usually costs.

3. Don’t just look for ski and snowboard gear

Several resorts and ski/snowboard areas use the show to get the word out about their mountain. Look around for resort booths and chat briefly with their reps. They might even be willing to dish out a free lift ticket.

Seriously. I got a two free lift tickets to Red Mountain Resort about three years ago at the show.
